The purpose of the Ora E. Anderson Conservation Fund for Appalachian Ohio is to provide a permanent source of charitable funding for conservation activities and programs in the areas of watershed restoration, sustainable forest practices and promotion of the region’s cultural and environmental history. Grants will be awarded to organizations or programs that:
- Help protect the region’s natural environment through education, acquisition, restoration,
and scientific research;
- Encourage collaborations and regional land conservation;
- Leverage cooperation and support of various efforts of like-minded organizations.
Guidelines
The Ora E. Anderson Conservation Fund for Appalachian Ohio welcomes grant requests from organizations that benefit the citizens of Appalachian Ohio and that are recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(3)c of the Internal Revenue Code. Applications will be received beginning July 2011.
Generally, the Fund makes grants to help launch new projects not addressed by existing organizations or to support special efforts of already established nonprofit organizations. A proposal needs to represent a unique and unduplicated opportunity that will affect a substantial number of people.
Projects
The Fund is particularly interested in projects that:
- preserve or restore natural habitats;
- assess/measure water quality, species, landscape alteration;
- encourage regional cooperation and is consistent with regional objectives;
- support/stimulate sustainable forestry;
- result in permanent protection of land via purchase or conservation easement;
- involve people of all ages, especially youth;
- educate the general public on the value of conservation principles;
- provide nature experiences for visitors to the region;
- identify as an objective in a Watershed Action Plan; and/or encourage/implement Conservation Design principles for construction projects.
The Fund does NOT award grants for
- general organizational operations;
- ongoing programs;
- individuals;
- operational deficits or reduced or lost funding;
- sectarian activities of religious organizations;
- scholarships and travel grants;
- annual fundraising drives, ceremonies, special or one-time events;
- public or private schools; or endowment funds
To be eligible for a grant, your organization must
- be recognized as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization with a primary focus on physical or cultural landscape;
- benefit the citizens of Appalachian Ohio;
- have a diversity/inclusion policy; and address needs that are not met fully by existing organizational or community resources.

- The project should demonstrate the financial resources and expertise to complete the project;
- Additionally, the budget for the project may include administrative costs, but these would be limited to 10% of the total project budget (the grant should not be a burden to the organization’s staff).
Award notification will be in early September. The Grantee must be able to attend the annual meeting of the Ora E. Anderson Conservation Fund for Appalachian Ohio, held in early October. |
